Volunteering & Traveller Research

Meet Róisín Mason

Róisín has worked for Birmingham Irish Association since October 2019 so almost six and a half years. As a Volunteer Co-ordinator I support my colleagues by matching prospective volunteers to their projects. I meet up with the volunteers on a regular basis when visiting our shop, dementia service, office and activity groups.

"As a Traveller Research Worker, I help with requests about the Traveller community from university students, statutory organisations, charities and councils by supplying them with relevant information. I raise awareness of the Traveller community by highlighting policies that affect them and highlighting good news stories on our social media pages.

“In preparation for the move to our new centre in Kings Heath I fielded nearly 40 volunteer enquiries. It is humbling and encouraging to see so many people wanting to give their time and share their skills to give something back to the community through volunteering.” – Róisín

“I am looking forward to getting to know our volunteers more and celebrating them during Volunteer Week from the 1st to the 7th June. Keeping fingers crossed that we have success in this year’s Irish in Britain Volunteer Awards after our volunteer led Ramblers group won in 2024. Also celebrating Gypsy (Romani), Roma and Traveller History month in June giving me the chance to share amazing stories and expand people’s knowledge.” – Róisíns

Róisín spoke to one of our long-standing volunteers about what being a volunteer and volunteering means to them.

“Before volunteering I was shy and found it difficult to put myself forward in crowds. Since my first day volunteering at the dementia centre, I immediately felt at home and knew this was the place for me. My confidence has grown, and I’ve made so many new friends, joined new groups, had so many new experiences, visited new places and I am one of the lead volunteers for one of our activity groups. Volunteering has added so much to my life.”

You can also check out the fantastic volunteering roles available on our social media pages.”
