And now for a change! Birmingham Irish Association has recently started a live Irish class for beginners at the new Irish Centre in Kings Heath. This is taking place on Fridays at 4pm. Anyone who is keen to learn Irish as a beginner is welcome to come along.
In future this article will be based on the work covered in the Friday class, in summary form. The first class took place on Friday 27 March, when we covered greeting and initial conversation. For pronunciation, it will be necessary to join a class, but here is the basic “starter” vocabulary:
Dia duit – Hello
Dia is Muire duit – response to Hello.
Conas atá tú? – How are you?
Tá mé go maith – I am well.
Cad is ainm duit? - What is your name?
(Terri) is ainm dom - My name is (Terri)
Is mise (Terri) - I’m (Terri)
Cé as thú? - Where are you from?
Is as Corcaigh mé. - I’m from Cork.
Sláinte – Cheers!
Slán – Goodbye
The next topic we cover will be food.
If you can’t attend classes, you will be able to follow the course right here.
Please get in touch with BIA if you have any questions or would like further information about courses.
Le meas,
Terri
