Children’s Emotional Support
Meet Claire White
Claire has worked for Birmingham Irish Association since June 2024. Her role involves spending one or two days a week at different primary schools. She works with children on a one-to-one or small group basis, supporting those who have been affected by trauma, insecure attachment, anxiety, friendship issues or other difficulties relating to emotional regulation.
The project is highly rewarding, as it enables us to provide children with a secure relationship with a trusted adult, where they can learn to explore their feelings and build resilience.
With over 60% of children experiencing adverse events at some point during their childhood, it is inevitable that some of them are going to find it difficult to manage big emotions. Providing children with a trauma-informed environment and regular time with a trusted adult can help to reduce the likelihood of mental health difficulties later in life. This role is vital for helping to improve children’s resilience in order for them to manage life as an adult and increase life satisfaction.
"I currently have a full caseload across 2 primary schools. I meet with each of them weekly or fortnightly and also attend regular meetings involving school staff and social services.
“This year I’m really looking forward to continuing my work with my existing children on case load, as well as getting to know some new children. Children bring great joy to my day and it’s so rewarding when you see the positive changes in their behaviour and their understanding of themselves.” -

“M has shown a significant positive change in his behaviour since the sessions started. Giving him time to talk and be listened to has made a huge difference. He has been able to regulate using things like the worry worm and just knowing he has been heard. Overall, the sessions have been extremely beneficial for him.” - Parent
