I hope you all had a great summer.

I was recently re-reading an inspiring old poem about the Irish language that I thought you might enjoy. I will include an English translation, but of course it is much more beautiful “as Gaeilge”!

Just a couple of grammar points:

You will notice that Irish, the language, is sometimes spelt Gaeilge and sometimes spelt Ghaeilge, with a H. This is because it is a feminine word and therefore takes a H (also known as a seimhiú) after the definite article, an, or the in English.

A seimhiú (h) is also used after the word mo, meaning my.

Croí = heart.

mo chroí = my heart.

Look out for the seimhiú and see if you can work out why it’s there!
