Cúpla Focal: A few words of Irish language

Birmingham Irish • March 22, 2026

Dia daoibh a chairde

An mhí seo, ba mhaith liom smaoineamh ar cúigí agus contaethe na hÉireann. This month I would like to think about the provinces and counties of Ireland.

You will know of course that there are four provinces in Ireland, though the name for provinces is cúigí, which is the word for a fifth! In ancient times there were five provinces; Meath was once a province too!

Cúige Uladh – Ulster (Tuaisceart – North)

Cúige Mumhan – Munster (Deisceart - South)

Cúige Laighean – Leinster (Oirthear - East)

Cúige Chonnacht – Connaught (Iarthar – West)

Your challenge this month is to see how many of the counties’ names, listed below, you can translate to English. (Just a few of them are tricky!)

Do you know the county colours? And what about their nicknames?

Contaethe – Counties.

Cúige Uladh has nine counties:

  1. Contae Fhear Manach
  2. Contae Dhún na nGall
  3. Contae Aontroma
  4. Contae Ard Mhaca
  5. Contae An Dúin
  6. Contae Mhuineacháin
  7. Contae Dhoire
  8. Contae Thír Eoghan
  9. Contae An Chabháin

Cúige Mumhan has six counties:

  1. Contae Chiarraí
  2. Contae Chorcaí
  3. Contae Phort Láirge
  4. Contae An Chláir
  5. Contae Thiobrad Arann
  6. Contae Luimní

Cúige Laighean has twelve counties:

  1. Contae Lú
  2. Contae Uíbh Fhailí
  3. Contae Chill Mhantáin
  4. Contae Chill Chainnigh
  5. Contae Cheatharlach
  6. Contae Bhaile Átha Cliath
  7. Contae Na Mí
  8. Contae Na hIarmhí
  9. Contae Longfoirt
  10. Contae Chill Dara
  11. Contae Loch Garman
  12. Contae Laoise

Cúige Chonnacht has five counties:

  1. Contae Na Gaillimhe
  2. Contae Mhaigh Eo
  3. Contae Ros Comáin
  4. Contae Liatroma
  5. Contae Shligigh

Ádh mór leis an dhúshlán. Good luck with the challenge.

Beir bua,

Terri
