Cúpla Focal Feabhra 2026

Haith a chairde. With St Valentine’s Day that occurred this month, I’d like to share some words of love with you!

Lá Fhéile Vailintín: St Valentine’s Day

There are lots of ways to express your love as Gaeilge!

Tá an grá san aer:  Love is in the air

A stór (a stóirín):  My pet, my darling

A thaisce:  My treasure

A rún:  My dear one, my loved one

A chuisle mo chroí:  My darling (pulse of my heart)

Is tusa mo ghrá geal:  You’re my dearest love

Grá síoraí (grá buan):  Everlasting love

Tá grá agam duit:  I love you

An bhfuil grá agat dom?  Do you love me?

Tá mo chroí istigh ionat:  I love you to bits. (My heart is in you)

Tá mé i ngrá leat:  I’m in love with you

Tá mé dúnta i ngrá leat:  I’m madly in love with you

An bhfuil tú craiceáilte i mo dhiaidh?  Are you madly in love with me?

Tá mé i ndiaidh titim ar mhullach mo chinn i ngrá:  I have fallen head over heels in love

Is tú grá mo chroí agus crá mo chroí: You are the love and the torment of my heart

Folaíonn grá gráin:  Love is blind

Is cloíte an galar an grá: Love hurts.

Thit siad i ngrá:  They fell in love.

D’fhuaraigh a ngrá:  They fell out of love. (From the word, cold. Their love has gone cold)

Tá deargadh an ghrá orthu fós:  They’re still in the first flush of love.

Litir ghrá (litir chumainn):  Love letter

Filíocht ghrá:  Love poetry

Amhrán grá:  Love song

Ní chanann tú amhráin ghrá dom níos mó:  You don’t sing me love songs any more.

Is iomaí cor a chuireann an grá de:  Love never runs smoothly.

Ní lia ná leigheas ar an ghrá:  There’s no cure for love.

Níl aon éalú ó gheasa an ghrá:  There’s no escape from love’s clutches.

Is ait an mac an grá:  There’s no accounting for love.

Is breá liom seacláid:  I love chocolate.

Ná déan dearmad ar na bláthanna:  Don’t forget the flowers.

Dá mhéad mo ghrá duit…  Much as I love you…

Finally, a few lines from one of our greatest love poems i nGaeilge: Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire, written by his wife, Eibhlín Dhubh Ní Chonaill (1743 – 1800).

In the opening verse she remembers the first day she ever saw him:

Mó ghrá go daingean thú                                           My steadfast love,

Lá dá bhfaca thú                                                    On a day when I saw you

Ag ceann tí an mhargaidh,                                 By the market house gable

Thug mo shúil aire duit,                                     I couldn’t take my eye off you

Thug mo chroí taitneamh duit,                     My heart shone with love for you

D’éalaíos óm’ charaid leat                              I fled from my friends with you

I bhfad ó bhaile leat...                                   Far from home and hearth with you
