Meet Paulene McDermott

Paulene’s role is to support children that have a Grandparent living with Dementia through one-to-one support and group sessions in Primary schools. The sessions provide a safe and fun environment for children and give them a valuable opportunity to share their experiences of Dementia with others and help them to learn positive ways they can connect with their loved ones.

Paulene delivers fun and informative workshops to children to raise awareness and help them understand Dementia through discussion, stories, memory games and activities.

“I currently work with local schools to deliver the small group sessions, including St Mary and St Margaret’s Primary School, Cheswick Green Primary and Hasluck’s Green Junior School and have worked with these schools for the last 5 years.” Paulene McDermott

Children in a classroom

When a family member has dementia, it can be particularly difficult for children to understand, and all the changes can make them feel anxious and worried.

Our workshops and group sessions help children to learn about dementia in a simple, child friendly way, encourage them to talk about their thoughts and feelings and help them to overcome any fear or worries they may have by talking to other children facing a similar situation.

“It’s been wonderful to receive such positive feedback from children, parents and teachers. Supporting children and families is extremely rewarding and it’s lovely to see the positive impact the Project is having on everyone involved. I am looking forward to visiting more schools and extending our support to more children and families. I would also like to organise additional events where children taking part in the project can visit our clients at the Dementia centre to enjoy arts and crafts activities and singing sessions together.” - Paulene McDermott

Children's workshop session

“The workshop was fantastic, well designed and delivered. The activities were engaging and Paulene explained dementia to the children in an age-appropriate way. Thank you so much!”

Deputy Head St Mary’s School

“I really liked how there was not only just information in the workshop but lots of fun games and reading of books. I liked the “Big bear, Little bear story” because it showed what it is really like to be a child that is close to someone with dementia. I learnt that I should help others who have dementia by being patience and showing love. I think learning about dementia is very important.” - Child from Year 5 - St Mary’s School
