Cúpla Focal: A few words of Irish language

Birmingham Irish • July 25, 2025

Let’s focus on describing ourselves and our family/friends this month.

Ar dtús (first) here are some useful adjectives when you want to say something positive!

  • Taclaí – fit
  • ard – tall
  • beag – small
  • cainteach – chatty
  • spraíúil – fun-loving
  • ionraic – honest
  • flaithiúil – generous
  • láidir – strong
  • díograiseach – hardworking/devoted
  • greannmhar – funny
  • cneasta – kind
  • tanaí - slim

And now for the more negative traits!

  • ceanndána – stubborn
  • gránna – ugly
  • leadránach – boring
  • uafásach – mean/horrible
  • lag – weak
  • bocht – poor
  • míchineálta – unkind
  • leithleasach – selfish

Here is how we can put this into sentences:

Is fear aclaí é. – He is a fit man.

Is cailín cainteach í. She is a chatty girl.

Is duine cairdiúil mé. I am a friendly person.

Ní duine cneasta é. He is not a kind person.

An duine ceanndána é? Is he a stubborn person?

Now try the following exercise:

Complete the words and write the English translation alongside:

Is duine t - - - í mé

Is fear a - - é

Is cailín i - nr - - - í

is duine - - g mé

Ní duine cn - - - t - é

Now match these up correctly:

Ard.  Strong

Laidir.  Poor

Cneasta .  Small

Gránna.  Stubborn

Bocht.  Horrible

Uafásach.  Tall

Beag.  Kind

Ceanndána.  Ugly

We will have a break in August. Bain sult as (enjoy) an Lúnasa (August) agus ná déan dearmaid (don’t forget) ar do Ghaeilge! Beimid ar ais i Meán Fómhair (We’ll be back in September).

Slán go fóill,

Terri
