Cúpla Focal

Dia daoibh a chairde!

As it’s the beginning of a new academic year, I thought this month I would talk to you about the learning opportunities that are out there for learners of all levels from total beginners to those who are already Irish speakers and would like to hold conversations with other Irish speakers or share the reading of Irish language literature.

If you are happy to learn with others on Zoom, we have weekly classes as follows:

Monday: 6.15pm – a class for post-beginners – if you have already learnt a little and want to continue to build your vocabulary and become more fluent. (taught by Nollag Ó Dúgain who is based in Leamington Spa)

Wednesday: 2.30pm – a reading and conversation group for those of at least intermediate level. (Group lead by Joe O’Reilly who is based in Manchester)

Wednesday: 6.30pm – beginners/post-beginners. Most people in this group have been learning for about a year. (I teach this group myself – Terri Lynk)

Wednesday: 8pm – a group for intermediate level – we are reading and translating short stories. (taught by Terri)

Saturday: 9am – Intermediate reading and grammar – we are reading An Triail by Mairéad Ní Ghráda. (Terri)

Saturday: 10.30am – Beginners. This group is ideal for total beginners

(Terri)

Sunday: 7pm – Higher level group (lead by Dom Buckley – based in Liverpool)

As well as all these classes on Zoom, there is a live session with Pat Duffy at The Emerald Club in Wolverhampton on Thursdays at 7pm. This is at a higher level.

Live classes also take place every Tuesday from 7pm at all levels at St Kentigern’s Club in Fallowfield, Manchester.

All of the above are free although you will probably be expected

to buy a book or two!

A Date for your Diary!

Irish Language Day at Leicester Irish Centre on 1st October 10am-4pm. There will be classes available for beginners and intermediates. Fee for the day is £10 including lunch.

I hope you find something to suit you there! If you are interested get in touch with me, Terri, through Birmingham Irish Association. Email sinead@birish.org.uk with any enquiries.

Tús maith leath na hoibre: A good start is half the work!

Beir bua.
