Lá na Gaeilge: an update

Birmingham Irish • May 27, 2022

This month, we were delighted to celebrate our Inaugural Irish Language Day at St Anne’s Parish Hall, and it’s safe to say a wonderful time was had by all who attended.

Below are a few words from our brilliant Irish language teacher, Terri, about the fantastic day packed with events.

“We were delighted to welcome well over forty students; they were delighted to learn, practise and improve their command of Irish; and one and all was delighted by the home-cooked lunch, lovingly prepared by our very own Audrey (of Birmingham Irish Association).

“Some students had their very first experience of the language, while others were fluent enough to treat us to a session of music and singing in the afternoon (thanks go there to Liam Tomlinson and his gang of musicians). Nollag Doughan gave a lecture on the history of Irish and the Gaelic Revival (so no-one can say we were only in it for the trifle – thanks again, Audrey!) We were also treated to a delightful Irish dancing display by Alicia and Eliza Finn-O’Shea.

“It was heartening to see so many make it out for the day, and from such long distances (from Milton Keynes to Leicester, from Sandwell to Wolverhampton, and from Essex to Leamington Spa (by way of pretty much everywhere in between). It warmed the cockles of my heart to see all the old faces I’d missed over Covidtide; and it was a pleasure indeed to meet plenty new ones, full of enthusiasm for the Irish language. We look forward to seeing you all at the next event. Watch this space, a chairde!”
