Cúpla Focale

Dia daoibh a chairde!

Tá an t-Earrach linn anois – Spring has arrived!

So let’s take a look at ways we might start getting active now the days are getting longer and warmer.

Tá na laethanta níos teo agus níos faide anois! The days are warmer and longer now!

Caitheamh aimsire – Pastimes

Here is the Irish for a few pastimes:

Spóirt – sport

Peil Gaelach – Gaelic football

Sacar – soccer

Iománíocht – hurling

rugbaí – rugby

leadóg – tennis

galf – golf

cispheil – basketball

And for more leisurely activities:

An amharclann – The theatre

Teach tabhairne – pub

An phictiúrlann – The cinema

ceol – music

ceol tradisiúnta - traditional music

ceolchoirm – concert

ceol tuaithe – country music

ceol clasaiceach – classical music

snagceol – jazz

leabharlann - library

If you want to say you’re musical, you can say:

Tá ceol agam (literally I have music)

Tá snámh agam – I can swim

The word imirt is used when playing sport, but the word seinnim would be used to play a musical instrument, so:

Tá mé ag imirt peil – I am playing football, but:

Seinnim an fhidil – I play the fiddle.

Is maith liom – I like – very handy phrase!

Is maith liom bheith ag snámh – I like to swim

Is maith liom bheith ag léamh – I like to read

Is maith liom bheith ag canadh – I like to sing

If you want to say you love doing something, use Is breá liom:

Is breá liom ceol – I love music.

Is brea liom an teach tabhairne – I love the pub!

Bain sult as an séasúr! Enjoy the season!
