Christmas Toy Appeal and Memories of Home Hampers

Birmingham Irish • December 13, 2020

It's safe to say that life has been turned completely upside down for so many individuals throughout our city of Birmingham. Here at the Association, we wanted to make sure that Christmas shines that little bit brighter for them.

When news reached us in September that the furlough scheme was to end for those in our community, we started our new toy collection for children aged up to 16, as we knew just how colossal the impact would be for families in our community this year and how many children may not have any gifts under the Christmas tree.
Since then, there have been so many wonderful organisations, companies and members of the community who have generously donated new toys for us to distribute. So far we have helped over 500 families to give that extra magic to their children this Christmas Day.

Due to the kindness of the Irish Embassy in London, we have also been able to create and distribute some wonderful hampers for those in the Irish diaspora of Birmingham, Sandwell and Coventry. This will enable them to experience the taste and smells of Ireland whilst keeping safe at home.
Each hamper holds a prayer written especially for the festive period for those missing Ireland, an Irish turf candle, a CD with traditional Irish songs and festive tunes recorded for us by the Children of Our Lady’s School choir as well as a selection of our best-selling Irish food and drink products. Together with the Coventry and Sandwell Irish Societies, we have distributed 210 hampers to homes across Birmingham, Sandwell and Coventry.

With everything that has happened this year, we know that Christmas will not be the same for more of us in our city than ever. Despite this, we feel that as a community, we have become united to care for each other in so many different ways, and make Christmas that little bit brighter for those who need it most.

As an organisation, we would like to extend monumental thanks to everyone who has helped us this year, we wish you health and happiness over this festive season and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.
